What is Linux?
Linux is an open source operating system based on UNIX. It was created by Linus Torvalds when he was a student at the University of Helsinki. Companies, such as Red Hat, enhanced Linux so it could be installed by following a set of instructions, just like any other operating system . Like UNIX, Linux comes in many 'flavors' and is highly portable. However, unlike UNIX, Linux flavors have been developed to work on personal computers as an alternative to proprietary operating systems.
Linux is an inexpensive, stable, reliable operating system, and has proven exceptional on network servers.
Owners of web servers and corporate networks running Linux report little down-time. Some Linux
servers have run for more than a year without a re-boot. Linux can be found in server rooms worldwide.
It's no wonder that Linux is being offered as an operating system on new personal computers by many computer manufacturers!
If you want an inexpensive, reliable, powerful, user-friendly operating system that can do it all, then
Linux is for you!
